20/40 vision refers to visual acuity or the clarity and sharpness of vision. It’s a measure of the ability to see details from a distance and is usually determined through a standard eye chart test.

To find out what your visual acuity is, schedule an eye exam with East Dallas Family Eye Care in Pleasant Grove.

What is a Normal Range for Visual Acuity?

A visual acuity test is one of the first tests your eye doctor will perform during a comprehensive eye exam. In most cases, you’ll be asked to read letters and numbers on an eye chart from a specific distance.

The tiniest row on the chart that you can read determines your visual acuity. People with normal (20/20) vision are able to read the smallest letters on an eye chart from 20 feet.

What Does 20/40 Vision Look Like?

20/40 means an individual can see objects at 20 feet that most people with normal eyesight can see at 40 feet. This means if you score 20/40 on a visual acuity test, you need to be 20 feet away from an object that people with normal eyesight can see from 40 feet.

While 20/40 vision is considered to be below average, it is not necessarily considered to be a problem. Some people with 20/40 vision may not even know they have a vision problem, since they’re used to seeing faraway objects as blurry. However, for others, 20/40 vision can be a hindrance.
